Hiking to Moon House Ruins 2022
A visit to Moon House Ruins, Cedar Mesa, Utah

I went to visit my friend Jonathon in Monticello, Utah and asked if he had any recommendations for hikes. He mentioned Moon House Ruins, which I had never heard of before, but the sound of “ruins” is all I needed to commit. The drive to Moon House Ruins from Blanding is about 52 miles, but it took us about 2 hours and 22 minutes to get to the trail head. The first hour was good road and accounts for 42 of those miles.

West side of Comb Ridge.

The Bears Ears are visible from almost everywhere.

The remaining hour is on bad roads for the remaining 9 miles and change. A vehicle with high clearance is necessary once you leave the main highway.

This is the turnoff to Moon House Ruins trailhead from Snow Flat Road. The trailhead is about 1.2 miles from this sign.

A permit is required to visit the ruins. From the trailhead to the ruins is less than a mile.

The trail down the opposite side of the canyon is straightforward except for a small drop onto a pile of loose rocks.
