Every time I pull out my iPod to play a game, my Kindle to read a short article, or my laptop to catch up on the latest blogs, I feel like I'm robbing my brain.

My brain wants to be occupied in the pursuit of something worthwhile, but another part craves amusement, animation, sound, entertainment. I'm going on a trip in tomorrow and I won't be packing my laptop. I may pack the Kindle. I'll definitely be packing a pen and notepad.

The same mechanisms that allow for quick mental jotting on the laptop also enable quick context switches to lesser pursuits.
