You are a red fighting fish
You are alive
You breathe
You swim
You frighten would-be invaders
You are not.

Where have you gone?
Where do all the small lives go
When they have spent their last
On living the only way they know?

Now I see you
Only in my mind's eye.
Why do I care?
Time makes us all God's
And eternity makes us all gods.

The breath of life having once passed
I see in my mind's eye
It will pass again
As with every lovely tree
And with every stray dog
And all the pretty horses
And every thing with wings.

We haven't the power
To will again all that was lost.
But One does
And all the promises
Made since the eternal Now
Will bring all that has breathed
Every small life, unnoticed
To breathe again.
